Turnstones and Facebook Updates

29 March 2012 return to blog index

Well I've finally dragged myself out for my first photography trip since last April, (despicable I know). Its actually the second time I've dragged myself out this week but the first time was cancelled when I arrived at the petrol station at 5am one morning en-route into the New Forest to discover I'd left my wallet at home and had to turn back.

For this trip I decided on some bird photography to get used to the camera again and opted to revisit my most favorite birding place in the New Forest, Keyhaven. I was hoping there would still be some Turnstones around to capture or maybe a little egret. To be honest I would of been happy with just black headed gulls or even pigeons as I was so desperate to get out and about again.

The sunlight was harsh and when I arrived I was happy to see that there were in deed a couple of Turnstones around. For the first hour nothing much happened, with the notable exception of maybe 1000 Canada geese swarming over head. Then just as I was about to call it quits, a whole flock of Turnstones came and landed not too far in front of me. Time to test out how rusty my stalking skills are. I managed to get pretty close and ended up lying in the mud and seaweed of the soggy Keyhaven shoreline. I managed to get a couple of shots of a turnstone washing itself which I have uploaded to the Birds Photography Prints | Coastal Birds Photography gallery.

Turnstone Washing

Considering I've been away from the viewfinder for almost a year, I was quite happy with the results, especially as the light was quite harsh as there was no cloud cover to be seen.

My girlfriend also managed to get off a sneaky shot of me at work from her camera phone. Can you spot me in the shot below? I overheard some tourist comment, 'I thought that was a seal for a minute but its some bloke with a camera laying down!'. Charming.

In other news, I'm sure some my followers may of noticed the recent changes to the Justin Kercher Photography Facebook Page. That's right, I've been forced over to the Timeline interface. I'm quite liking it in all honesty but I wouldn't want it for my main profile. I've also created a cover image and new logo for the page that will also be added to the Photography Prints website.

If you don't already follow the page on Facebook, please be sure to 'like' the page and share it on your wall. Also feel free to share any photos you like to. I could do with the publicity and would appreciate any help with this. You can find the Facebook page by following the Facebook icon at the top of the website, or clicking the image to the right.
